On the Equivalence of the Parallel Channel and the Correlated Cluster Relaxation Models

The question of the origins of nonexponential relaxation is addressed in terms of the probabilistic approach to relaxation. The interconnection between two diierently rooted probabilistic models, i.e., between the parallel channel and the correlated cluster models is presented. We show that clearly diierent probabilistic origins yield in both approaches a well-deened class of universally valid ...

Slow logarithmic relaxation in models with hierarchically constrained dynamics.

A general kind of model with hierarchically constrained dynamics is shown to exhibit logarithmic anomalous relaxation similar to a variety of complex strongly interacting materials. The logarithmic behavior describes most of the decay of the response function.

Simple model for nonexponential relaxation in complex dynamics.

The nonexponential relaxation occurring in complex dynamics manifested in a wide variety of systems is analyzed through a simple model of diffusion in phase space. It is found that the inability of the system to find its equilibrium state in any time scale becomes apparent in an effective temperature field, which leads to a hierarchy of relaxation times responsible for the slow relaxation pheno...

Nonexponential protein relaxation: dynamics of conformational change in myoglobin.

The picosecond evolution of the tertiary conformation of myoglobin (Mb) after photodissociation of MbCO was investigated at room temperature by probing band III, a weak iron-porphyrin charge-transfer transition near 13,110 cm-1 (763 nm) that is sensitive to the out-of-plane displacement of the iron. Upon photolysis, the iron moves out of the plane of the porphyrin, causing a blue-shift of band ...

A unified model of protein dynamics.

Protein functions require conformational motions. We show here that the dominant conformational motions are slaved by the hydration shell and the bulk solvent. The protein contributes the structure necessary for function. We formulate a model that is based on experiments, insights from the physics of glass-forming liquids, and the concepts of a hierarchically organized energy landscape. To expl...
